Mayo Clinic

The goal of Mayo Clinic’s space medicine program is to make research ideas for space travel become a reality, and to translate those ideas into treatments for patients on earth. Mayo Clinic’s Florida researchers are studying new technology with the potential to continuously monitor an astronaut’s vital signs in space and successfully launched the technology on an EXOS Aerospace suborbital rocket from New Mexico in 2018.  Mayo Clinic scientists recently sent large samples of stem cells to the International Space Station to investigate the effects of long-term cosmic radiation that astronauts encounter, and have flown other payloads of donated adult stem cells to explore whether these stem cells can be mass produced in microgravity and used for treatment of stroke.
